Au Japon, lorsque l’on parle de quelqu’un (ou à quelqu’un) en employant son nom, on y accole systématiquement un suffixe dit “honorifique” qui sert à marquer une certaine forme de respect. Les termes “Monsieur” ou “Madame” n’existant pas en japonais, l’utilisation de ses suffixes honorifiques peuvent être traduit ainsi, mais pas toujours, et s’arrêter à ce concept de “Monsieur” ou “Madame” serait une erreur.
Voici les principaux suffixes honorifiques :
さん san = c’est le plus utilisé, il s’emploie avec presque tout le monde la plupart du temps, sans distinction de sexe
さま sama = s’emploie envers les clients, pour l’adressage du courrier, ou envers une personne généralement âgée à qui l’on marque une grande marque de respect
くん kun = s’emploie envers un jeune homme (plus jeune que soit)
ちゃん chan = s’emploie envers une jeune femme (plus jeune que soit), ou avec un tout petit enfant, même garçon
せんせい sensei = s’emploie envers un médecin, un docteur, un professeur, un enseignant, un pasteur,…
Il faut savoir que dans la langue japonaise, les pronoms personnels sont en réalité peu utilisés : dans une conversation, あなた (anata) est le plus souvent remplacé par le nom de l’interlocuteur, suivi du suffixe honorifique qui convient.
Prenons l’exemple suivant :
やまもとさんのねこです Yamamoto–san no neko desu
Si nous parlons de Mr Yamamoto avec quelqu’un, cela peut se traduire par “c’est le chat de Mr Yamamoto“.
Cependant Mr Yamamoto peut très bien être l’interlocuteur, c’est à dire la personne se trouvant face à nous avec qui nous dialoguons actuellement. Dans ce cas, la phrase se traduira par “c’est ton/votre chat” (rappelons que le vouvoiement n’existe pas en japonais, la traduction par “ton” ou “votre” dépendra de la position de l’interlocuteur et du degré d’infinité).
Autre exemple :
たなかくんのいぬです Tanaka–kun no inu desu
C’est le chien de Tanaka
ou si Tanaka est l’interlocuteur :
C’est ton chien
(ici la question du vouvoiement pour la traduction ne se pose pas car c’est le suffixe くん qui est utilisé, ce qui signifie qu’il est moins âgé ou que c’est un ami)
