Gion

Kyoto

Created in the feudal period, Gion is a traditional neighborhood in Kyoto and is very famous for its geishas (or geiko in the local dialect) which wander in the streets, dressed with their silk kimonos. With its tea houses where geishas – literally meaning “artist” – practice dancing, singing, music or simple talking, Gion is one of the various faces of a traditional Japan which, nevertheless, remains topical.
