Nijo Castle

Kyoto

Registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Nijo Castle is a wide fortress, including two palaces and various gardens, on the north from Kyoto. Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa ordered the castle’s building in 1601. In 1868, it was used for the beginning of the Meiji Restoration, one year after Yoshinobu Tokugawa gave back the polical power to the Imperial Court in this castle in 1867. Today, we can admire its layout, visit its reception rooms and walk through its elaborated gardens.
