Shuri Castle

Naha / Okinawa

The Shuri Castle, Naha’s former name, used to be the residence of the Ryukyu monarch. The fortress burned many times through the centuries and had to undergo the WWII bombings during the Okinawa battle. After a long period, as we did not know if the castle was about to survive or not, the restoration of the castle was finally possible and achieved in 1992. Formerly known as Japan’s national treasure, this building is now registered on the World Heritage List.

Access

⇒ Reach the Shuri Castle using the Yui Rail, Okinawa’s monorail, and getting off at Shuri station (terminal). The castle is located on the west side of the station.
